While this remodel doesn't fall under the category of a high ceiling conversion, it’s still a great example of the possibilities that come with creative architectural design. For this project, the CALOFT construction team extended the front entrance outward, creating valuable new living space and adding:

The living room was also in desperate need of a glow-up -- both metaphorically and literally. Adding skylights brought much-needed natural light into the space while giving the room a brighter, more open, and luxurious feel.

This home had a huge amount of unused space hiding above the living room; the homeowners decided to put it to work.

Through a high ceiling conversion, we turned 519 square feet of open-to-below space into two new rooms: a spacious open loft and a brand-new bedroom. The loft provides a dedicated media and gathering area, while the bedroom adds much-needed space for the growing family without expanding the home's footprint.

Our architectural design team used detailed 3D renderings to help the homeowners visualize the remodel before construction began. From there, the CALOFT team transformed the design into a finished addition.

The downstairs living room received an upgrade of its own, with a custom coffered ceiling and deep blue accent adding character and tying the new spaces together.

One question we hear constantly: won't converting your high ceiling into a new room make the space below darker? Surprisingly, no. Homeowners rarely say "dark" they say "warmer," "cozier," and notice their table lamps and chandeliers suddenly seem to work better.

Here's why. Light in a home comes from two sources: natural light (windows, skylights) and artificial light (lamps, sconces, recessed fixtures). Adding a new floor system does block direct sunlight streaming down from any upper windows. But at the same time, we're adding a brand-new ceiling to the room below — and that changes everything.

Effectively, we're cutting your home's cubic space in half while doubling its reflective ceiling surfaces. The new ceiling sits much closer to the windows than the original high ceiling ever did, creating soft plumes of reflected, diffused light instead of harsh direct sun. The same principle boosts artificial light too, lamp glow bounces off a nearby ceiling far more efficiently than off a distant, high one.

Exceptions: shaded windows, dark ceiling paint, and closed curtains still limit light. But for most homes, plantation shutters angled upward maximize this effect beautifully, bouncing sunlight up onto the new ceiling for a soft afternoon glow.
