San Diego County High Ceiling Conversion This is what we like to see - a giant open-to-below space looming above the living area! What you see here is a prime candidate for a high ceiling conversion; it's a special type of remodel that entails filling a high ceiling space and turning it into a new room. Being that this home's high ceiling space is absolutely massive, there were many possible configurations to choose from. The most common option would be something like a new master bedroom. The homeowners opted for an open loft & small office combo, which we feel is much more interesting. The result? A spacious open loft - perfect for the family to gather, watch a movie, and spend some quality time together! We can't forget about the new office! Some people - especially ones that work from home - can really struggle with the home/work life balance. Sometimes, just simply adding a dedicated space to your home for work is enough to resolve that issue. Either that, or some people just need a secluded space for study time. Thanks to our amazing architectural design team and the CALOFT team, this home received a MASSIVE glow-up! |

San Diego County High Ceiling Conversion An ever-decreasing amount of free space is something the homeowners have begun to notice. The lack of a dedicated work space is also becoming a concern. The homeowners were weighing their options when the realization set in - there's plenty of real estate right above their heads! This home has an open-to-below space looming above the living room. The ceiling is not vaulted, but flat. Additionally, there are no stairs in the way to worry about. All of this is equates to a perfect recipe for a high ceiling conversion. This is about as straight-forward as a room addition can get! This is good news for the homeowners. It means less money and time spent on their remodel - from design, planning, and all the way to construction! So what's the plan - or rather, what are the plans? The homeowners have been presented with two design options! Design Option #1 The first choice is to replace the existing open loft with an enclosed office, and build an entirely new loft over the open-to-below space. While some people like keeping their office open, there's something to be said for enclosing such a space. There's nothing worse than trying to get work done under constant distractions and noise. Over the open-to-below space will reside a new loft. Whether it will function as a play area or media room, the amount of space gained is hard to argue against. Design Option #2 Think of the first design option and reverse it - that is essentially what this is. The existing loft space will be retained, while the new enclosed office will be built over the open-to-below space. Current Status This project is moving out of the design phase. We can't wait to begin building this dream home! We will update this project as it moves along, so stay tuned! |

San Diego County High Ceiling Conversion Homes with expansive high ceilings present a unique opportunity that many homeowners don't immediately recognize. Instead of investing in a traditional room addition that extends the home's footprint, it's often possible to create new living space by making use of the existing volume above. Conventional additions frequently involve major structural changes, extensive demolition, or building into the backyard. These projects can significantly increase both construction costs and completion times. A high ceiling conversion, on the other hand, allows homeowners to capitalize on square footage they already have. This particular home offers enough available space to accommodate a wide variety of room layouts, such as:
With this much space to work with, combining multiple room types is also a realistic option. After reviewing several design possibilities, the homeowners ultimately chose to create a spacious open loft bonus room. Open lofts are among the most versatile spaces a home can have. Whether it's used as a media room, study area, home office, or a place for the family to gather, the layout can easily evolve as your needs change over time. At the same time, the design preserves the open, airy character of the second floor while adding valuable functional square footage. This project is nearing the final design stages. Once everything is approved, the CALOFT team will begin work -bringing these glorious design ideas into reality! |
